One of the most interesting things we come across since the launch of The Networking Circle is the diverse range of business owners that we get to meet – and this week is no exception as part of our Featured Business Owners Series, as we chat to Sharen Turner of Secret Scent Aromatherapy.
Sharen Turner is you good old fashioned, down to earth, urban bohemian – hailing from Cronulla in Sydney’s southern suburbs. With an interest in the art of aromatherapy that spans three decades, it’s pretty safe for me to say that Sharen really does know her stuff.
Boasting a warm personality, and always a good positive vibe, Sharen has not only built business out of being a practitioner of aromatherapy, fung shui and reiki – but also a built up a brand featuring specialized products that compliment her talents in a natural approach to healing.
So you have been a qualified Aromatherapist for many years now? Tell us the story of how you got into the specialty, and how you have grown to where you are today?
Whilst travelling throughout Southern Africa in the 1980s, I was introduced to aromatherapy by a local woman.
At the time I didn’t have any real career plan and I was hoping that during my travels something would inspire me. My friend in Africa was growing roses to make essential oil, after learning more about the healing properties of essential oils, intrigue turned into inspiration. Shortly after I moved to London to study aromatherapy and began experimenting with different blends and remedies – to this day the healing power of these plant extracts amaze me.
Returning home to Sydney in the mid 1990s, I continued my aromatherapy and aromatic medicine studies and completed by Diploma. Soon afterwards, Secret Scent was born.
What other services does your company also provide?
In addition to providing a wide range of Secret Scent aromatherapy products, made only from the finest quality carrier oils, the purest essential oils, natural extracts and floral waters, we also offer feng shui consultations andaroma shui parties.
Feng Shui is increasing in popularity – it is based on the ancient Chinese art of harnessing positive energy known as chi. Chi is a movable positive and negative life force which plays an essential role in Feng Shui.
Over thousands of years the Feng Shui masters developed a defined set of guidelines, rules and mathematical systems to form the basis of its theories. The goal of Feng Shui as practiced today is to design, modify or remedy the area where you live or work, so that the energy entering and moving through it, is the healthiest, most powerful, most productive and well balanced for you.
I offer home or business consultations, providing a reading of the ‘energetic blueprint’ of the home or office and create solutions to bring harmony and balance to your surroundings.
The remedies used in a traditional Feng Shui consultation involve the use of one or more of the five elements of fire, earth, metal, water and wood. We use Feng Shui colours and shapes from the bagua chart, together with crystals, pendulums, lights, dowsing rods and essential oils.
My aroma shui parties are really well-liked as they provide a social environment to be introduced to both aromatherapy and feng shui. The girls get-together and have a lot of fun!
We love how you are keen to closely work with clients to really hone in on their specific needs. Explain some situations and blends that you have created to be able to deliver this amazing form of customer service?
Over the many years of running Secret Scent I’ve been able to develop various blends to help certain age groups and genders.
As my girlfriends started families I created birthing blends for them to help them through their pregnancies. I also developed baby products to calm unsettled babies, relieve colic, cleanse, moisturise and soothe baby’s skin and help promote sleep. Our ‘mums and bubs’ range is one of our best sellers.
I’ve also worked with a number of nursing homes to develop an arthritis creams – now stocked with many physios and chiro as well as aged care facilities.
Recently I’ve created a new line for ‘abused children & women’ working with Mary Jo McVeigh of Caracare.
What is the most invaluable tool you have implemented into your business routine?
My desire to make a difference is my most valuable business tool. I’m passionate about the benefits of both aromatherapy and feng-shui. People recognize me now and will often stop me – in the streets, morning coffee or at the beach – keen to talk to me about what product I might have that can ‘fix this or help heal that’.
Tell us the different ways in which you sell your products, and get yourself out there.
Word-of-mouth has been key to my business success over the years, many people in the Sutherland Shire know either me or my products – after all, I have been doing this for over 18 years now. I also ensure I attend various local business and woman’s events to keep expanding my networking and sharing my knowledge.
In addition, my Facebook and other social media platforms have been invaluable to growth of my business – all directing people to my website which I spend much time and energy on.
What in your mind, are the 3 most important values in business?
I believe that if you don’t have passion for what you are doing you won’t be 110% into it. Starting and operating a business takes a lot of energy and enthusiasm, with passion it’s difficult to maintain drive and commitment. I also believe honest and integrity are essential values in business in life.
What do you do to wind down? Describe your ultimate day off.
I spend a great deal of time at the beach – is a place where I can relax and unwind, a regular swim in the ocean is a great aura cleanser and I recommend it to anyone who needs a pep up!
Sharing days/nights out with friends over dinner and wine rates highly on my list of fundamental pleasures in life!
